In the Airway Heights Corrections Center of Washington state 70-year-old, Robert Munger life’s came to a bloody end. Munger’s life was brought to an end at the hands of 25-year-old Shane Goldsby. When Goldsy discovered that Munger was serving time in the same facility, he could not contain his pent-up rage as a result of his sister’s violent attack. Munger, a convicted child molester, had raped Goldsby’s younger sister. Goldsby found Munger in a vulnerable situation in a common area inside the prison and sought his revenge. Goldsby attacked Munger, beating him with bare hands, kicking him, and stomping on his head. Washington State Patrol has stated that there was little any guard could do to intervene during Goldsby’s attack in enough time to save Munger’s life.

Munger was serving a 43-year sentence after being convicted of child rape, child molestation, and possession of child pornography. Goldsby was sent to the same corrections center simply because he lived in Cowlitz County, the same county as Munger. The prison’s CCTV footage shows Goldsby getting Munger into a vulnerable situation and then attacking him. Goldsby is shown to be kicking and punching Munger, then stomping on his head. When Goldsby was confronted about the attack afterward he confessed that he attacked Munger because he was the man responsible for attacking his younger sister. Goldsby is now facing charges for first-degree murder as a result of the brutal attack. He has since been moved into an intensive management unit where he can be closely watched.

The Washington State Department of Corrections has been working with the Washington State Patrol to conduct an investigation into why Munger and Goldsby were allowed to be housed together despite this connection. A spokesperson for the agency confirmed that the Department of Corrections has been conducting an investigation but it has found no evidence that Munger and Goldsby had a previous connection. Goldsby did not mention the attack on his sister during his intake interview. Corrections staff were unable to document any connection between Goldsby and Munger on their own because Goldsby’s little sister had a different last name. Goldsby’s sister had her mother’s last name. So, there was no evidence to suggest any connection between Munger and Goldsby. The internal investigation also found that prison staff followed all protocols when assigning both prisoners to their cells. Munger’s attack on Goldsby’s younger sister was simply missed because of the lack of documentable connection. Department of Corrections Secretary Stephen Sinclair was quoted as stating, “While the Patrol’s independent investigation found the department properly followed all procedures in place to protect our incarcerated population, this is an unfortunate and complicated incident, and we are always reviewing procedures to identify areas for improvement.”
