According to many students, their main objective of going to school is to pass exams by getting good grades. They have been brought up in environments where getting good grades and excelling in their campus courses is all they need to get their dream jobs. The weight that the curriculum has been awarded leaves no room for learning basic life skills that are equally important as education is. Lack of these basic life skills may cause more harm than good to the future generation. Fortunately, most tutors have realized the lack of these crucial life skills in their students; and have proposed re-introducing some courses into the school curriculum to help instill vital life skills to the scholars. The proposed subjects that educators feel should be given greater weight are economics and budgeting. Although the elders are aware of what is lacking in these students, the learners know nothing since they believe what is taught is all they should know hence the need to bring back home economics in school. The initiators of this idea believe that home economics subjects can help kids of today learn important life skills that may help contribute to their career development.

For instance, budgeting is one of the proposed subjects to be included in the curriculum. Despite it being incorporated in some subjects, teachers’ point of view is that it should be taught as a separate subject since budgeting is not all about business management or economics. They feel it should be an independent subject because the current generation is mostly interested in knowing how to make money and should thus be guided on how to budget wisely. If money-related topics are taught in a way that captures the attention of the learners, then the lesson becomes more exciting, and students may tend to love it the more. Since even young children have the potential of reading and understanding English and mathematics, then it’s evident that they will understand basic home economics as well. This teaching pattern needs to be introduced to kids who are six years and above. After teaching the young ones these subjects from the moment they join grade one, the pattern should continue all through up to college level.

The reason kids need to be taught economics and budgeting immediately they join grade one is because, at the campus, where parents believe these subjects should be taught in detail are not. At the university level, students major in their field of specialization, mostly where one’s interests or passion are. In case your child’s passion is in art and design, then that will be the area to specialize in. If their area of specialization isn’t related to business, they won’t have a chance to learn fundamental economic principles.
